Ask Dr. Matt – "Do you have a cure for heartache?"

A visitor to my Myspace page left this comment:

“Dear Dr. Matt,

I need a cure for heartache. What do you recommend?

BTW, the mustache is Sexy.”

Dear Girl Who Likes My Moustache (GWLMM – I’ll just call you Gollum to make it easier.),

I think you stumbled upon something that I detail in my book, that, often times, you already have the answer you’re looking for.

You see, you ask me about the cure for heartache, and then you made the offhand comment about my moustache. This is what I call a “dangler,” that is, a seemingly disconnected comment from the rest of the conversation. But it actually is the answer!

Gollum, the cure for heartache is to simply be bold enough to make comments like that to available people like me. You don’t even have to know if they’re available. Just go out there and do it. Just so you know, your comment tickled my nethers, and it can do the same for others.

Usually, Gollum, people are not really looking for a temporary cure for heartache, but some amount of stability. Some commitment. You can think of that as being represented by a ring. But YOU have to be committed to your own cure, so you have to imagine yourself as having all your thoughts and desires focused on that ring. You must have it. You must possess it. It must become precious to you. Yes, precious.

Do this. Chase your ring to the ends of the earth, and you will find your cure.

I’ll tell you what’s NOT next for me: finding myself. I see all these people, especially chronic self-helpers, who decide that their task is “finding themselves.” Well guess what, bucko, you’re already found. Peekaboo, there you are. “Olly olly oxen free!” Boom. Found. (more…)
