Folks, I bet you’ll be interested in this. There’s a guy who visits me sometimes who tells me some of the most amazing dreams. I’ll call him Dreamer Guy. Now, his dreams have been so interesting that I’ve started recording them. Maybe someday I’ll tell him that I’m doing that. Here’s a recording from a recent session between myself and Dreamer Guy:
[Transcript - Recorded 2009/09/05]
DG: Okay. So, I meet this girl.
Dr. M.: This is in your dream.
DG: Yes. I meet this girl, and we hook up, and she starts spending nights at my place.
Dr. M: Uh huh.
DG: But… She’s so distant. She’s there, but it’s like she’s totally emotionally closed off, you know?
Dr. M: Sure do.
DG: Just a shadow of person. You know? Yeah. Which makes her so unmemorable that I keep finding myself forgetting her name. But I don’t want to let her know that, as it stands, she means very little to me.
Dr. M: Hmm.
DG: Because despite how I feel, I don’t want to be unkind. So, anyway, we have sex–
Dr. M: Well that sounds nice.
DG: Not really. I mean, It’s alright. Just kinda bland.
Dr. M: I see.
DG: A few days later my mom is visiting my apartment, asks about the new girl, and I forget her name again. I’m thinking, “Oh crap this is not good.”
Dr. M: No, it would not be.
DG: Finally, I have to tell the girl that I’m ending it. And at the moment I tell her that I’m breaking up with her, I discover that she’s made these gorgeous, passionate paintings for me.
Dr. M: She painted them at that time?
DG: No, she had showed up at my house with them. They were going to be a gift to me.
Dr. M: Okay.
DG: When she hears what I have to say, she is incredibly upset and paints these wide swaths of paint on the paintings, writing cruel things to me. It’s like all of the sudden there’s all this explosion of passion and I’m seeing her as a real person.
Dr. M: Interesting.
DG: Yeah. So, I leave the apartment, and I run into her sometime later, perhaps weeks later. She’s selling paintings to someone else. They look like the paintings she gave me and I’m crushed, because I still really liked the paintings and the gift.
Dr. M: Of course.
DG: I ask her about it and she’s irritated and says that no, they are different paintings. And that mine are fine. Somehow she alludes to the fact that they’re not even ruined. So I go back home, and sure enough, the gorgeous paintings are there. The writing is there, but when I get up close, I see that there was a pane of glass in front of them.
Dr. M: Incredible.
DG: She had only scribbled her messages to me on the glass. So, I carefully wipe the glass clean, and I’m left with her original gift hanging in my apartment, these beautiful gorgeous paintings.
Dr. M: Wow, that is just incredible, Eric. Such a rich and interesting dream.
DG: What do you think it means?
Dr. M: Oh, I haven’t the slightest, but I sure enjoy hearing about it.
